What is Sustainable Fashion?
Let’s talk about Sustainable Fashion. What’s the meaning of it? Why is it important? How do we start, and…What does Sustainability have to do with Fashion?
First! Let’s solve the mystery. What is sustainability? Basically, there’s no universal definition agreed upon for the word sustainability. In reality, sustainability can mean a lot of things for different people.
But, if we go back to the etymological meaning… the word “sustainable” comes from Latin roots and means “stands on it’s own” It’s lexical components are: the prefix sub (from under a higher surface) to have (to dominate, to retain) plus the suffix-isle (indicating possibility)
And so, if we go from the beginning… SUSTAINABLE means: “To give support to” “Sustain” or “Maintain”. Sooo…
What is Sustainability?
It is an adjetive for something that is capable of being sustained, i.e., something that is “bearable” and “capable of being continued at a certain level.“. In the end, sustainability can perhaps be seen as the process or processes by which something is maintained at a certain level.
Therefore, sustainability can be defined as the processes and actions by which WE HUMANITY avoid the depletion of natural resources. Which is influenced by the way societies are organized to maintain an ecological balance so that society’s quality of life is not diminished.
This way, we can say that resources, exploitation, manufacturing operations, investment management, technical developments, wealth distribution, institutional changes, among others, are being sustainable if they do not damage the ecosystem and if they do not diminish the quality of life and society.
What is Sustainable Fashion?
Sustainable Fashion –for me– means being honest with yourself and being aligned with your values. It’s asking the right questions and not just turning a blind eye to things you’d rather not see. Giving up comfort in order to stand up for what you believe in. It’s being responsible, and consciously deciding that your choices matter.
Why is Sustainability Important?
More than 100 billion garments are sold worldwide due to this 1.2 billion tons of CO2 are released annually, which is more than all international flights and shipping traffic combined.Despite all these alarming statistics, consumption rates continue to rise.
IF WE!… as creators, as people who love’s fashion don’t engage in sustainable practices. The industry will collapse, as well as the environment and vulnerable societies. Then…
If something is sustainable then it has longevity. It’s practice and development has a positive impact on all elements involved; social, environmental, economic, cultural and political.

WARNING, GREEN WASHING!!! ⚠️
Green washing is a thing…which is basically when a company or organization spends more time and money marketing itself as environmentally friendly than actually minimizing its environmental impact. It is a deceptive publicity stunt designed to fool consumers who prefer to buy goods and services from environmentally conscious brands.
